Favre changes mind, signs with Vikings
Apparently able to call the shots any way he might decide, "retired" NFL QB Brett Favre signed a contract to play this season for the Minnesota Vikings. Favre's "un-retirement" came just a few weeks after he insisted he wasn't going to come back to the NFL, after retiring last season as quarterback for the New York Jets.
Speaking at a news conference held by the Vikings, Coach Brad Childress explained in part, "We believe adding a player such as Brett Favre to our mix will be a strong positive for this football team. As we have conveyed before, his unique knowledge of our system, the NFC North and his innate skills make this a rare opportunity."
Rare opportunity? Many feel Favre's last season with Green Bay and his year with the Jets in 2008 demonstrate that the 39-year-old future Hall of Famer certainly is past his prime, and could even be a detriment to the Vikings' season.

Hall of Fame Game to launch NFL season
The Hall of Fame Game, set for this Suday's in Canton, Ohio, will pit the Tennessee Titans against the Buffalo Bills, in the traditional kickoff of the new NFL season. Predictably, the game will be played carefully -- after all, it's an honor to play it, but who wants to end their season with some weird injury in August??
(The whole issue of "it-doesn't-really-count-so-why-play-it" preseason NFL football is for another day and another post.)
The Titans bring the best AFC record into this season from last, but some analysts fear they didn't work very hard to improve or even actively maintain any "edge" they had in 2008. I've seen them picked to finish as low as third in the AFC South. I'd find that a bit low, personally. I'll give them at least second in the South.
Buffalo made the big acquisition during the off season -- adding should-be superstar receiver Terrell Owens to their stable of weapons. One of the most enigmatic men ever to play in the NFL, we must ponder this: Who's going to show up this Sunday (and for every game of the season, of course) in Owens' uniform? The ace receiver with the tools and stats to match up to anybody, or the obnoxious showboat kid that just can't seem to stay away when Terrell takes the field?
Most importantly, irrespective of which team wins the Hall of Fame showcase, it's the time when the NFL will honor some greats, when some "living legends" of football will gather together -- and the launch of a new NFL season! Yipee!
Favre passes on Vikings, stays in retirement
Saying among other things that, "I didn't feel like physically I could play at a level that was acceptable," legendary former Green Bay Packers QB Brett Favre confirmed with the Minnesota Vikings Tuesday that he will remain in retirement.
For fans who have followed Favre's long career, it was perhaps a little disappointing to hear the nearly 40-year-old legend admit that his gusto and level of physical ability to play the game had declined. He said the decision had been a hard one, and was made after consulting with former coaches Mike Holmgren and Andy Reid as well as other friends, former coaches, and former teammates.
Favre was recovering from shoulder surgery he underwent in May to repair an injury suffered near the end of last season's stint with the New York Jets. And in the end, he said, retirement seemed the best option.
